A historical port town with a tasteful landscape, “Tomonoura”
“Tomonoura” is where many movies including ‘The Wolverine’ and ‘Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea’ were filmed. It has prospered since ancient times as a ‘port waiting for the tide’, and it’s written in Manyoshu, the oldest collection of Japanese short poems. Still having white-walled storehouses and old-fashioned merchant’s houses, this place is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site and an Important Preservation District of Historic Buildings. In addition, visitors also can see a stunning view unique to the Seto Inland Sea. If you have an extra time, please stop by at Sensuijima Island, a 5-minute ferry from Tomonoura. It is a precious island where ancient nature is preserved, and at night, the fantastic light world created by the sea fireflies spreads out there.

“Kaki Marugoto Senbei” using a whole oyster
For souvenir, Maruiichi Shoten’s “Kaki Marugoto Senbei (Whole Oyster Crackers)” is recommended. Oysters placed on each rice cracker spent about 2 years in the sea of Akitsu, where the salt concentration is high, so they have a firm texture and rich taste. Maruichi Shoten sorts high quality oysters by hand and bake them with dough made from exclusive potato ‘Maru Aka’ grown in Akitsu red soil rich in minerals. It’s perfect as a snack and nibble.
