“KOHAKUTO”: Agar confectionery in pastel colors produced by new brand ‘IRODORI’ of Tsuruya Yoshinobu with over 200 years of history
‘IRODORI‘ is a new brand developed by Tsuruya Yoshinobu (鶴屋吉信) founded in 1803. In these days, its “KOHAKUTO (agar confectionery, 琥珀糖)” which is put in a box like a colored pencil is becoming a hot topic on Instagram. These stick-shaped sweets have 5 different types of flavors such as lavender, rose and chamomile. The slightly transparent pastel-colored confection will make you feel as if you got adorable cosmetic items. Its outside is crispy and inside is smooth, and your mouth is filled with a mild sweetness. It’s also one of the charms that it last for 25 days without putting it in the fridge.

“Carre de Cannelle”: Customizable Yatsuhashi of ‘nikiniki à la gare’ which is a brand of the shop with over 300 years of history
‘nikiniki à la gare’ is a new brand produced by Shōgoin Yatsuhashi Sohonten Kyoto Main Store (聖護院八ッ橋本店), which has made Yatsuhashi for more than 300 years. They sell sweets combining various ingredients such as caramel and colorful Yatsuhashi different from others’ ones. In particular, our recommendation is “Carre de Cannelle.” Although it’s Yatsuhashi, you can choose 2 kinds of skins from 5 kinds and stuffings (sweet bean paste) from 8 kinds. These things are different depending on the seasons, so you will be excited no matter how many times you visit here. Before eating them, prepare a small bowl. Choose your favorite skin and stuffing, put them on the bowl, and form it like a flower. It might also be a good idea to make your original shape.

“Chinmari”: Japanese-style marshmallows with a fluffy texture and mild sweetness produced by ‘Takanoya Sadahiro’ with over 90 years of history
At ‘Takanoya Sadahiro (高野屋貞広),’ lots of Japanese sweets expressing Kyoto’s four seasons have been born since its founding in 1927. All of them feature their elegant appearances and rich sweetness and let us feel the elaborate technique of craftsmen. On the other hand, there are also adorable ones that make our hearts skip a beat. That is “Chinmari (ちんまり).” When you open a box, sweets using animals including rabbits and pigs as a motif show up. This sweet is called Houzui and made by adding white egg to agar. Its fluffy texture is like marshmallows. It’s good to enjoy them with other sweets, cocoa and coffee.
