Cool Down in Summer by Looking at Modern Japanese Style Main Hall and Lush Trees! -”Nogi Shrine” Located between Roppongi and Akasaka
Roppongi and Akasaka, where there are many places perfect for dating and shopping. Between such two areas, do you know relaxing spots covered with lush greenery? Its name is “Nogi Shrine(乃木神社)”. In a sizzling hot summer, the scenery that makes you feel cool spreads out, and it has a mysterious atmosphere as well.
There are several Nogi Shrines in Tokyo and Kyoto, Tochigi and so on. Most of those are related to a military man Maresuke Nogi, who took command of Russo Japanese War. Nogi Shrine, which is a one-minute walk from Nogi Station on the Chiyoda Line, is said to be the place where he committed suicide with his wife after the death of Emperor Meiji. Many Japanese people were impressed by the hearts of their loyalty, and this shrine was built here in 1923.
When passing through the large torii gate, you can feel strong vitality from lush trees and a dignified atmosphere like cleansing your body and soul.
The wall and the torii also have a modern Japanese design with the warmth of wood including the main hall. It’s believed to get various benefits in such as academic success, good health and childbirth.
In addition, there are also ‘Akasaka Oji Inari Shrine (赤坂王子稲荷神社)’ where red torii gates stand in a row and ‘Treasure Hall (宝物殿)’ which exhibits some relics of Nogi couple.
Although Nogi Shrine has such history as we introduced, they have been remembered by people by taking in the seasonal events and trends such as decorating handmade pinwheels in summer created by Miko (shrine maiden) and holding coming-of-age ceremony of Japanese popular idol group ‘Nogizaka 46.’
